Along with wearing face masks, washing your hands frequently and getting vaccinated, one of the COVID-19 mitigation strategies recommended by the CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention) is improving ventilation indoors. Since Coronavirus is evidently airborne and the risk of virus transmission indoors in much higher, CDC specifically recommends the use of air filtration systems such as electronic air cleaners, commercial air purifiers, UV air purifiers and central air purifiers for air sanitization, reduce the spread of COVID-19 and lower the risk of exposure.

When it comes to buying an electronic air cleaner, the goal is simple: to improve the quality of air in your home or offices. The best air purifier can reduce the concentration of polluted or harmful aerosols in indoor spaces. This means, a central air purifier can not only be used to reduce the risk of airborne transmission of COVID-19 in closed spaces and buildings but also to reduce the exposure of the occupants to other sources of air pollution including PM particles, VOCs, odor, bacteria and virions that have adverse health effects.

Let’s look at the key features to consider while selecting an electronic air cleaner for protection against COVID-19.

#1. CADR RatingCADR (Clean Air Delivery Rate) is an international metric used to measure the effectiveness of an air cleaner. Plainly put, the higher the number of CADR of a central air purifier or an electronic air cleaner, the faster it will clean the air and serve a larger area.

The UV air purifier by Magneto CleanTech, with HEPA filters, can remove most airborne particles including the SARS-CoV-2 strain of Coronavirus – in a single pass, giving additional protection against the airborne transmission of COVID-19.

#2. Air purification technology – The application of germicidal UV light for air disinfection has been put in practice since the mid-20th century. Ultraviolet Germicidal Irradiation (UVGI) is a commonly used air purification technology that disinfects air by emitting UV rays in the range of 254 nm. The UV rays at this wavelength disrupt the DNA of microorganisms, bacteria, and viruses, ensuring no further proliferation.

The UV air purifier from Magneto CleanTech is certified to kill 99.99% of Coronavirus from the indoor air and can be used as standalone air sanitizer and for in-duct, on-coil, and in-room applications.

#3. Room size – Determine the room dimension for which you need to buy the commercial air purifier. For this, match the size (sq ft) of the space with the coverage area of each device. The advantage of a central air purification system, uch as Magneto Central Air Cleaner (MCAC), integrated with your air-conditioning system is that it provides coverage of the same area as your air-conditioner, making it simple for the users to select the right size.

Also, look for air purifiers providing five  air changes per hour. To maintain good indoor air quality, the volume of air in an indoor space must be replaced by fresh air 5 times an hour or once every 12 minutes.

#4. Where to place the air cleaner – Incase of Central Air Cleaner, the solution is integrated with the air-conditioning system, eliminating the need to decide a location for the air purifier in the room. The commercial air purifier can be fitted with any make and capacity of new and existing air conditioning units. With the proven efficacy of UV technology against viruses such as coronavirus, most air purification systems are now available with inbuilt UVGI capabilities. However, in case a commercial establishment such as healthcare facilities or hotel lobbies go for the upper room UVGI air purifier by Magneto CleanTech, it should be at a ceiling height of 2.4 m (8 ft) to enable effective application.

#5. How to maintain an electric Air Purifier – One of the biggest advantages of a filterless technology is the elimination of the step of changing filters in the air purifiers. In a filterless technology that does not only trap pollutants and microbes, but also eliminates them, filters just need to be cleaned on a regular basis for better performance. However, with the stand alone air purifiers, you need to change filter periodically depending on the pollution level, your usage and technology.

In compliance with ASHRAE recommendation, the Magneto UV air purifier does not allow microbes, fungi, pollutants, VOCs, PM2.5, and SARS-CoV-2 Coronavirus, dust or mould to accumulate on coils and is designed to improve the performance of air conditioning systems by keeping the coil clean and improved energy performance with a low pressure drop.  Magento Central Air Cleaner (MCAC) is certified by Indian and global bodies like CSIR, ISO 16890, UL and CE.

Selecting the right electronic air cleaners, commercial air purifiers, UV air purifiers or central air purifiers can be overwhelming today. However, once you know the type of air purifier that works best for your air quality concerns, finding an air purifier becomes more manageable. Then, it is only a matter of finding a central air purifier that is right for your room size and budget.
